Here are some facts about Afghan Children:

  • The average Afghan lives on $2 a day
  • 39 per cent of children under the age of 5 are moderately or severely underweight
  • 54 per cent of children under the age of 5 have stunted growth
  • 18 per cent of girls between 15 and 24 can read and write
  • 51 per cent of boys between 15 and 24 can read and write
  • 50% of the Afghan population is less than 18 years of age with almost no education.
  • Over 400,000 children are maimed, because of land mines.
  • Over one million Afghan children are suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome.
  • 309,000 children under five years of age die each year; under-five mortality rate ranks fourth worldwide
  • International aid groups estimate that 35,000 children live on the streets of Kabul alone.
